V Green Meeting of the Americas 2005, in Belo Horizonte MG. - Brazil

With the participation of over two thousand people and the presence of representatives from several continents, besides political leaders, governmental and non-governmental on the field of Environment and Sustainable Development, the V Greenmeeting of the Americas, surpassed all expectations, as it has been happening over the years. The opening of the meeting, in 20^th September 2005, with people even sat on the floor and on the stairs of the great theater Sesiminas, in Belo Horizonte, demonstrated the relevance of the event and the increasingly interest social-environmental issues provoke on society. At the opening, the general coordinator of the meeting and Paliber president director, Ademar Soares, emphasized that the indifference of governments and society to environmental issues is responsible for severe consequences to humanity

existence. Time is passing by and that is the major menace, for days will come when entire generations will pay the price for our irresponsibility to the climatic conditions of the planet, he added.

Covered by the television Rede Globo for three days and Rede Brasil, with live talks in the plenary of the Conference, the V Greenmeeting of the Americas discussed themes such as climate change, whose consequences have been dealt with by several countries, mainly the USA. In a topic debated by Dr. Thelma Krug from IAI - Inter-American Institute for Change Research and by professor David Zee from the Departament of Oceanography of UERJ – Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, he stressed that intense rains and anomalous droughts followed by destructive winds can be boosted by man’s interference in atmosphere. The emission of gases by the use of fossil fuels causes the heating of the planet, generating the Greenhouse Effect.

Other discussed themes were, water resources, forests and biodiversity, Kyoto’s protocol, energy, Amazon, biotechnology and bioethics, besides the Importance of the Amazonic Cooperation Treaty, considered by Ecuador’s ex-president and General-Secretary of OTCA - Organization of the Amazonic Cooperation Treaty, Rosalía Arteaga, who warned about the need of several Amazonic countries getting together for fighting the predatory extractivism and organizing sustainable development. Still on this topic, the State Secretary of Amazon Environment, Virgílio Vianna, presented social-environmental projects that have been held in the Amazonic region.

In that occasion, it was also presented at the plenary of the Meeting the lecture of Dr. Luiz Antônio Arroio, on “Petrobrás, Eco-efficiency in Petroleum Industry and Dr. Nelson Cabral de Carvalho, Coordinator of SMS, Petrobrás’ Corporative in the North Region, on “Petrobrás Environmental Management in the Amazon”. Dr. Jean Benevides, talked about “Caixa’s corporative environmental policy”. Dr. Wagner de Siqueira Pinto, discussed “Banco do Brasil Social-environmental Responsibility”. Dr. Virgínia Valladares, from Aneel presented “The challenges of Brazil’s Expansion of Electric Energy Generation”. Niéde Guidon, sociologist and archeologist, PhD at Sorbonne/France, denounced the paralization of the construction, for the second time, of the airport, necessary for the development of the project of sustainable ecotourism at Capivara’s National Park, in Piauí State, which received two times a great sum of federal funds and was not concluded. Marcos Terena, from Terenas’ tribe, evaluated the importance for the man to feel nature not just as something apart but as part of himself. Minas Gerais State-Secretary, José Carlos Carvalho, welcomed all participants, along with the Vice-Mayor of the City of Belo Horizonte, Ronaldo Vasconcellos. Giving continuity, the leader of the Green Party at the Lower Chamber, Deputy Sarney Filho, talked about “Amazon: the exhaustion of the mechanisms of environmental control in the management of the last great tropical forest of the world”.

Palestine’s ambassador, Musa Amer Salim Odeh, asked for support to all Brazilian community in order to bring peace and life to her country by guaranteeing a territory, an every country’s right. Ambassadors from Australia, Peter Heyward, from Ukraine, Yurii Bogaievsky, from Finland, Hannu Uusi-Videnoja, from Germany, Bernhard Graf von Waldersee, showed the actions promoted by their countries in relation to a social-environmental sustainable development.
