II Green Meeting of the Americas

The capital of Minas Gerais was the stage (from May 20-23, 2002) for one of the most important, well-attended environmental events – II Environmental Summit of the Americas. The summit brought together national and international leaders and authorities, diplomats, politicians, students, university professors, scientists and technologists from various continents around the world. The forum discussed serious ecological problems that affect the planet in the hopes of finding solutions to reverse the degradation process that human beings have brought upon the environment due to their existence on the planet. The event was hosted by Palíber – Pacifist and Ecological Organization, under the coordination of its President – Ademar Leal Soares – with the support of the Ministry of the Environment, Brazilian Environmental Institute (IBAMA), the city hall of Belo Horizonte, the Environmental Newsletter, Cemig, Furnas and Cururipe Energy Plant. Ademar Leal Soares stated at the opening event, just before the Johannesburg-2002, Rio + 10 Summit, that it is unacceptable to think vaguely about the proposals that the whole world defends unconditionally without a clear definition of pressing environmental policies for many countries of the Americas and other continents around the world.
